Firearm Transfers

How a firearm transfer works in Houston.

Everything between “buy now” and walking out with it — what the sending dealer needs from us, what you bring on the day, and how the transfer, your fingerprints and your Form 4 can all happen in a single visit.

How a transfer works

01

Buy the firearm

Purchase from any dealer, marketplace or private seller who ships to an FFL. Tell them your transfer dealer is HTX Gun Services / American Patriot Outdoors LLC in Houston.

02

Seller requests our licence

Most dealers want a signed copy of our FFL before shipping. Have them email us, or call and we'll send it the same business day.

03

The firearm ships to us

It arrives at our licensed premises and is logged into our bound book. We'll contact you when it lands.

04

You come in and fill out the 4473

Bring a valid government photo ID with your current Texas address. We run the background check through NICS.ATF Form 4473

05

Proceed — you take it home

On a proceed, and once all state and federal requirements are met, the transfer is complete. Delayed or denied results are determined by NICS, not by us.

What to bring

  • Government photo ID with your current address. If your licence shows an old address, bring supporting documentation.
  • Your Texas LTC if you have one — bring it either way.
  • The transfer fee — $35 for the first firearm, $20 for each additional firearm in the same shipment.

Shipping instructions for the sending dealer

Ship to American Patriot Outdoors LLC / HTX Gun Services, 430 S Texas 6 #204, Houston, TX 77079. Include the buyer's name inside the package so we can match it on arrival. Ask us for our signed FFL first — we send it the same business day.

Please don't have anything shipped before you've spoken to us. A package that arrives with no buyer name and no warning slows everyone down — a thirty-second call prevents it.

Do it all in one visit

This is the part most people don't realise is possible. We hold a Type 07 FFL and a Class 2 SOT and we do fingerprinting in-house — so a single trip can cover the 4473 on your transfer, live-scan or FD-258 prints for an NFA application, and the Form 4 paperwork on a suppressor. Most Houston shops send you to three different places for that.

If you know you'll need prints, say so when you call and we'll have the scanner ready — see NFA fingerprinting and suppressor transfers.

Private-party and estate transfers

We can receive firearms from private sellers in other states, which federal law requires to go through a licensed dealer. Same fee, same process. For in-state private sales Texas does not require a dealer at all — but plenty of people would rather not hand a firearm to a stranger on trust, so we run the 4473 and the NICS check and keep the record. That one is a private-party background check at $75, because the firearm is logged into our books and back out again.

Frequently asked

Transfer questions

How long does a transfer take once it arrives?

The paperwork takes about fifteen minutes. Most background checks return a proceed while you wait. A delay is issued by NICS and is out of our hands — federal law allows the transfer after three business days if there's still no response, at our discretion.

Do you charge more for handguns?

No. $35 for the first firearm regardless of type, $20 for each additional firearm in the same shipment.

Can I have multiple firearms shipped together?

Yes, and it saves you money — $35 covers the first, $20 each after that in the same shipment.

What if my background check is denied?

NICS makes that determination, not us. We cannot release the firearm on a denial. You can appeal directly with the FBI. The transfer fee covers work already performed and isn't refundable, and the firearm returns to the sender at your cost.

Do you accept transfers of NFA items?

Yes — we hold a Class 2 SOT. Incoming NFA transfers are $85 per item, and $0 on NFA items bought through HTX Guns. See suppressor transfers.
